Configuring Your Domain Name

Phase 1: Domain Names

Domain Names Are Important

We put domain registration as Phase-1 because you will need it before you can sign up for a hosting plan or design a website.

But that’s not the only reason why domain names are important:

It's Your Address

Your domain name identifies your location on the Web and Internet as your home address identifies your personal or business location within your city and state.

Domain names are identified by a numbering system known as IP (Internet Protocol). Each IP number is unique and difficult to remember.

So, to help us–and others–remember where our domain is located on the Web, the IP address is represented by your domain name. If your visitor enters your correct domain name, they will locate your website.

Every domain name is unique and matches only your unique IP Address.

It's Your Brand

Domain names resemble the old custom of branding irons where the image was burned onto the owner’s property. Once it was identified, everyone could determine the ownership of the property.

Domain names are like an online brand; they identify your company, products and services.

And a good domain name can burn an image into your visitors minds.

It's Your Image

The domain name you give for your website can be an image planted upon the mind of your visitor. It’s the first impression an online visitor gets of you and your business.

Your domain name represents you, your business, products and services.

Sometimes the image, as the old branding iron did, is burned deep and can’t be easily erased. So, be sure to choose an appropriate domain name.

It's Your Idea

Your Domain Name is your idea as to how you want to be known on the Web. It’s your impression that you give to your online visitors. And it’s the first impression they get of you and your business.

And that impression can give your visitors an idea of your attitude toward your business and them.

Domain Registration

12 Tips For Registering A Domain Name

1. Think About Your Business

Before you invest in a domain name, we suggest you take some time out and think about your business.

What is your business? What is your business name? Do you sell things? Whom are you trying to reach and communicate with?

What impression about your business do you want your visitor to have?

2. Don't Use Special Characters

While some special charters are permissible to use in a domain name, we advise against it unless it really makes sense to do so.

The domain “dogsbestfriend.com” is already registered. So, you decided to use “Best-Friends-.com.” Which of these domains is best remembered?

If your clients can’t remember your web address, or can’t type it correctly, they can’t make a return visit to your site.

3. Keep It As Short As Possible

Short domain names are better than long domain names. That’s true for easy typing, easy spelling, and easy remembering.

If you have a long business name, try to find a way to shorten it; a way that will still represent your business appropriately, but one that will not cause a burden to type or remember.

Short domain names are easier to type, spell and remember which helps your customers make a return visit.

4. Make It Memorable

A memorable domain name is easier to remember which helps your visitors make a return visit to your website.

Remember, make it memorable to remember.

5. Avoid Bad Associations

Bad associations with other meanings should never be made purposely, but in some instances they are easy to make accidently. Especially when you try to shorten a domain name or use it as an acronymn.

For instance, say your business name is rather long (Publishers United Knowledge Emporium) and to shorten it up, you use the first letters of each word.

Why would anyone want to visit a site with a name like that?

6. Use A Related TLD

The .com TLD (Top Layer Domain) is still the most popular but it’s hard to find a .com name that’s not already taken. Unless it is an unusually long name.

Newer TLDs have been made available to help the business owner associate the type of work they do with their domain name. As .agency, .business, .company, etc.

Some newer TLDs are a little more expensive, but the extra investment could help you add value to your domain name.

7. Include A Keyword

Keywords are the words that potential visitors type in a search bar to help them find the information they are looking for.

The more relevant the keyword is to the search query, the higher the listing on the search results.

It’s a known fact that the more relevant your domain name is to the search query, the better chances it has to be listed.

It improves a potential visitor of finding your services (your SEO results).

8. Check Your Spelling

Check your splling. Spelling mistakes ruin good information. And good information is what people are searching for.

Too many spelling errors will cause a potential client from taking you seriously, responsible, or caring. If you don’t care how your website content is, why should people be expected to take you seriously about your other business dealings?

9. Prevent TLD Competition

TLD competition can be started when a business owner registers a name with a particular TLD and then someone with a simular business registers it with a different TLD. For example, mybusiness.com and mybusiness.org.

This can cause confusion amoung searchers and cause them to go to an entirley different website that offers the same services.

Don’t create confusion for your potential visitors.

10. Don't Overpay

As everything else, domain names experience an increse in registration fees from time to time.

And some of the newer TLDs are more expensive depending upon their classification and popularity. But these domain names with their unique TLDs can add value to your business.

What we are talking about is being on guard for excessive charges, not only on the initial registration, but especially on the renewal registration.

Shop around and see what other hosts are charging for a domain like yours.

11. Register In Your Name

Check your host or domain registrar and be sure the domain is registred in your, or your company’s, name.

That way, you have full management over it and can take it with you if you were to move to a new host.

12. Check Before You Click Register

Check before you click or tab the registration button.

Check it two or three times. Make absolutly sure it is the domain you want and that it is spelled correctly.

Once you register a domain, you can’t give it back. It’s yours for the entire length of time you registred it. Even if it is spelled wrong. To get the correct spelling, you will have to register that domain also. That, of course, doubles the cost of your domain.

Check it before you click Register.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Domains

Do you register the domain in my name?

Yes! And it seems this question has two view points.

1. If you mean will the domain be registered IN your name, yes. When you register a domain with Inphase, it will be registered in your name.

2. If you mean can you register a domain AS your name, yes. Any name can be registered, if it is not already registered. Check here for a freelance website with the domain name as RobertFPoe.com.

Can I have more than one domain?

Yes. But, check your hosting plan to be sure. Different hosting plans allow a different number of domains. In our Shared Hosting Plans, any added domains are considered “Parked” and will not host a website. However, you can point, or redirect, a parked domain to go to your main website.

Can I register a domian for one month at a time?

No. Domains can only be registered for one year or multiple years, up to 10 years maximum registration, as established by the ICANN Association.

Does Inphase Hosting transfer domains?

Yes. We will transfer a domain to our hosting platform free of  charge. And we will unlock your domain for you at no charge if you want to transfer it away from our hosting platform to another hosting company.

However, be aware that the Domain Registrar will demand a registration fee before the domain can be transferred. You will lose none of your present registration time; it will be added to your present registration.

And remember, domains can only be transferred after 60 days of their current registration or transfer.
